Spyware


Spyware is a program that is used as a PC surveillance tool. It serves as a tracking software which when installed on a system captures the data and sends to the remote computer referred to as “mothership”. It intercepts all the information without the user’s consent and there is no way that the user can control the data being sent. All kinds of activities like email logging, snapshots, chat etc can be captured. It can also install additional software and also access different websites causing virus on the user’s PC. Spyware can change the computer settings that can cause a loss of a program or misfunctioning of the computer. This type of interference in the privacy is generally annoying for the user and make them uncomfortable with the concept of spyware. At times, the user does not come to know about the presence of the spyware program. Internet Explorer browser is most affected by this program and can make important parts of the operating system accessible. The windows registry is attacked and exploited which may lead to the degradation of the system.

The intrusion to the privacy of the user’s PC is done with the use of advertisements supported software displayed in the form of pop-ups without the consent of the user. Though, the spyware may at times violate the privacy of the user but is not considered as illegal. It is also a major threat to the large business firms and financial institutions. Numerous techniques are now being used to tackle this problem which either block or remove the spyware. Many anti-spyware programs are now being installed to maintain the computer’s security.
